Securing Farming Futures
A young farming family embarks on the journey of self-employment. As they take over the family farm, they face crucial decisions about their future. Should they continue basing their livelihood income on traditional farming, having to combine it with jobs far from their remote living location to ensure the costs are covered, or establish a secondary income stream with locally sought-after forestry services? Commuting for off-farm work strains their daily farm tasks, while forestry presents a sustainable revenue potential, contingent upon proper equipment.
Objective
The project aims to facilitate the family’s transition to sustainable self-employment by enhancing their forestry capabilities. The goal is to equip them with the necessary tools to expand their income sources while ensuring harmony with farm responsibilities.
Activities
Activities included assessing the feasibility of transitioning to regional forestry services, considering the family’s expertise and available resources. Following this, the project focused on procuring modern forestry equipment, to replace the outdated and unsafe machinery.
Outcome and Impact
Through sustainable forestry management, the project not only supports the family’s income diversification but also contributes to regional economic stability. The integration of forestry services ensures the long-term viability of both the farm and local businesses reliant on timber. Furthermore, it fosters environmental sustainability by maintaining stable woodland ecosystems.
“Starting our own farming venture meant seeking additional income streams due to limited farm profitability. Transitioning to forestry services seemed promising, leveraging my skills and our extensive woodland. However, securing a new cable winch was critical for operations.
